The CDJ-2000s are quickly replacing the CDJ-1000Mk3 as the industry standard player in the world’s biggest clubs, while the CDJ-900 takes root in regular clubs. For semi-pro bedroom DJs and bars and completing the rekordbox™ enabled CDJ line-up, Pioneer today announce the new CDJ-850, available from August 2010 (suggested retail price: £799).

CDJ-850: resembling the CDJ-2000 while still at an affordable price

Intentionally designed to feel and function like other CDJ models further up the range, the CDJ-850 will give that all important reassurance when turning up to a gig with other CDJ models in the booth. And just as budding DJs practiced on the CDJ-800 at home in preparation for their club gigs on the CDJ-1000, the CDJ-850 is set to become the new training ground for DJs hoping to break it on the club circuit. Apart from the ProDJ Link connection, the CDJ-850 inherits so many of the most exciting features from the CDJ-2000 and 900, offering major enhancements over the outgoing CDJ-800MK2. The full-size 206mm jog wheel will be familiar to all existing professional CDJ users, giving the same performance and feel as the top range products. And no matter which CDJ you play on, the browsing logic is always the same and all the work put into customising rekordbox collections will be available on every player in the range. So wherever you play, it will always feel like home.

The CDJ-850 features the same large rotary select dial as the CDJ-2000 and is the most affordable product in the range to feature the Wave display to see peaks and drops of the music. An intuitive Tag List feature allows you to think ahead 10, 20 or many more tracks by arranging temporary set lists on the fly. You can save this as a playlist and recall it later in rekordbox or use it again at the next gig. And what’s more, it’s the only player to feature Tag List editing, so you can add, remove and change the order of tracks in the list. Adapting to all ways of working, the CDJ-850 plays music from CD, USB and PC. Despite the price point, it’s capable of playing professional 24-bit WAV and AIFF, along with MP3 and AAC music files. It can be used as a Midi controller and 24-bit soundcard for music software, and with HID capability, software companies will be quick to announce Plug&Play support.

Main features

Retains most of the principal functions from the industry club-standard CDJ-2000, such as the 206mm jog dial and large screen for visual information.

Able to play all types of digital files, such as WAV, AIFF, MP3 etc.

Incorporates rekordbox, allowing the creation and editing of playlists pre-gig, and recalling cue and loop settings for more inventive DJing.

On-screen display allows for quick and easy music selection, and the wave display allows greater grasp of the dynamics of a track.

By connecting via the CDJ-850’s special interface (USB HID), more complex DJ software can be used without using a control disk.

Tag list allows registering and itemising of tracks at the touch of a button.

Auto beat loop function, tempo variation, CD ‘resume’ function and vibration-resistance are just some of the other additional features.

Expect to see this unit at a SEDA ShowNight in the near future, for more info, visit the Pioneer website or djsounds.com

The SRM1801 has a high-output 18″ woofer that can be felt from across the room.

Pioneer have announced two brand new products that will make up the perfect party set-up. The DJM-350 and CDJ-350 bring features found on Pioneers ultimate club products, such as powerful creative effects, remix-style looping and rekordbox™ compatibility.

Pioneer CDJ-350 and DJM-350

The CDJ-350: stepping stone for the club circuit Offering something completely new and unique at this price point, the DJM-350 enables you to capture every last nuance of your performance to high quality recording on USB. There’s no need for extra kit or wires, it all works inside the box. Simply plug in a USB memory device into the mixer and you’re able to record professional uncompressed audio into WAV format. Split the recording as you mix This could be anything from a carefully crafted mix, or for recording vinyl, ready to be played back digitally on the CDJ-350.

And the coolest feature has got to be the ability to split the recording as you mix by hitting the ‘Track Mark’ button providing beautifully indexed mixes ready for burning to CD without needing to make a single edit. Drag and drop the files into our new rekordbox™ music management software, and all your music will be automatically primed with beatgrids to take advantage of the CDJ-350’s beat-keeping tools. Prepare and plug in

Being a top performer is often down to serious preparation and the new CDJ-350 comes to life when you plug in your carefully prepared rekordbox™ digital music library. In fact, the CDJ-350 is the perfect stepping stone for DJs looking to break the club circuit as all the work put into preparing a killer music library and playlists will all work on the industry standard CDJ-900 and CDJ-2000 digital decks. If you’re ready to rock the party on the CDJ-350s, you’ll be one step ahead of the rest when it comes to playing in the clubs.

The DJM-350: new and unique in its price range MIDI functionality and effects Music enthusiasts and DJs making their way to the top will be glad to find a USB connection on the CDJ-350 allowing MIDI controller functionality with compatible DJ software or for use as an audio interface.

We manage to push the boundaries on the DJM-350 which features four subtle yet powerful effects that help you build energy into the music without overpowering the mix. All of this accessed from a single two-directional dial. Twist the Gate effect to the left to tighten up the high frequency of the track, and to the right to tighten up the bass. You’ll also find filters combined with Bitcrushers, and a manual Jet effect that puts you in direct control of this well loved effect for the first time. And to top it all off it has a gorgeous sounding high and low-pass filter, just like the DJM-800.

We look forward to seeing these at a forthcoming SEDA ShowNight.

Allen & Heath will be launching a new club installation product, the Xone:PB patchbay, and the XD-40 monitoring headphones at Pro Light & Sound, Frankfurt. The Xone:PB patchbay is a 1U rack size, passive interface box, designed to simplify the task of connecting encoded vinyl replay systems to installed mixers without the need to re-patch, providing a quick and easy solution to set changes in busy club line ups.

The outputs from up to four audio sources and the inputs to the mixer channels are connected to RCAs on the rear panel of the unit. The front panel connections echo the outputs from the audio sources on the left side, while connections on the right provide inputs to up to four external sources. Switches on the front panel select whether the mixer inputs are connected directly to the audio sources or diverted to the external sources, allowing very quick and simple interfacing to scratch amps or computer soundcards. The audio source connections on the front panel are duplicated, enabling two scratch amps to be connected to the same audio source for simple DJ handovers.

Additionally, two switchable inverse RIAA filters are available to enable line level sources to be connected to the phono preamplifiers of the mixer, there is common mode noise attenuation filtering on all external inputs to help reduce laptop power supply noise, and an earth lift switch helps prevent ground loops.

Joining the flagship XD-53 monitoring headphones, Allen & Heath will also be introducing the Xone XD-40 headphones, offering excellent audio fidelity in a compact, lightweight format. The XD-40’s have 40mm neodymium drivers, 40 ohm impedance, 103dB sensitivity, a 15Hz – 28kHz frequency response, can handle up to 1.3W of power, and at 220g, are lightweight for extended use. The closed cup design provides good isolation from ambient noise and minimal bleed, plus there is a 90 degree angle swivel earpiece for easy cueing.

The Xone:PB will be available from May 2010 at an SRP of £210 + VAT

Here is the press release from Pioneer:

“The art of DJing is now in the digital age, and the next generation of DJ mixers needs to keep pace with the CDJ revolution. Our DJM-2000 truly does that.

The brand new DJM-2000 is our most powerful performance mixer and is the perfect match for the new industry-standard CDJ-2000 digital decks.

With an innovative touch screen and arsenal of remixing FX, the DJM-2000 forms the ultimate club mixer. No less than six individual effects processors lay the foundation for hundreds of music manipulation combinations, so a DJ can always create their own unique sound.

The new DJM-2000 takes advanced features – thought only possible in software – and reinvents them in the physical world. Its intuitive layout will feel natural to existing Pioneer DJM users allowing creativity to flow whilst keeping its technical complexity under the skin.

Renowned DJs assisted in development

The top of the range new mixer has been developed with the help of a number of international DJs. James Zabiela, Roger Sanchez, Eddie Halliwell, Tom Middleton, the Swedish House Mafia, Paul Woolford, John ‘00’ Fleming and Radio 1’s hard dance darling Kutski have all tested out the DJM-2000 at various stages of development – giving it the ultimate stamp of approval.

The DJM-2000 mixer, in conjunction with the CDJ-2000, offers a new performance orientated platform for the increasingly futuristic artform as the next ten years unfold.

DJM-2000: A mixer that excels with its functionality

Taking the best DNA from our other top end mixers and with other major enhancements, the DJM-2000 represents a new approach to mixing never seen before. It has effectively built in the technology of the EFX-1000, removing the need for an external effects unit along with touch screen technology from the SVM-1000.

The DJM-2000 is the world’s most complete and creative DJ mixer. It’s the essential mixer to get the most from the new CDJ-2000, and offers amazing new creative possibilities.

Come together with ProDJ Link

The ProDJ Link function makes it easy to switch over from one DJ to the next. By connecting up to 4 CDJ-2000s / CDJ-900s via LAN cable into the mixer and two laptops running rekordbox via USB In, the DJs can share music libraries across all decks.

The DJM-2000 also excels with its functionality. While inheriting the basic layout of their club standard DJM series, we have come up with a larger interface positioned perfectly in the middle of the mixer. The very first 5.8” large LCD multi-touch panel allows the DJ to use touch panel effects whilst checking them visually. It also comes with beat effect and INST FX functions, which means the DJ can alter the sound spontaneously without having to connect to multiple devices – allowing for a more flexible and unique performance.

The DJM-2000: A new reliable platform for creative DJ mixing at the highest level

Simplified connectivity

Another highlight of the INST effects is that they are available individually on each of the four channels. They offer more accurate control of filters, and the Hi Mid and Low EQ on each channel can be switched to make them Isolators – giving the DJ more choice.

The CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900’s HID control of DJ software allows virtual decks to be manipulated without time-code vinyl, and now the DJM-2000 further simplifies connectivity directly to your Mac or PC by having a soundcard built in.

Just as clubs and professional DJs are upgrading to CDJ-2000s, the new DJM-2000 completes the setup, offering a new reliable platform for creative DJ mixing at the highest level.”

Following the recent decision by British mixer manufacturer, Allen & Heath, to alter the colour scheme of its Xone DJ range, leading London nightclub, Matter, has installed a new storm grey Xone:92 in its main DJ booth.

Roberto Pieroni, in Matter’s main booth with the new storm grey Xone:92

“The Xone:92 is an iconic product, one that I have been working with it for years. It has never let me down, despite having been in the hands of some really tough DJs,” explains Matter’s head of sound, Roberto Pieroni. “Although very familiar, all the controls on the new colour 92 appear easier to find thanks to a clearer layout and design; for example, the booth level can be more easily distinguished from the mix level. As ever, the sound quality is impeccable.”
The colour change is purely cosmetic, and there are no alterations to the Xone range’s design or performance.

“The best thing about Matter’s new Xone:92 is that the new colour perfectly matches our Technics 1210’s!” concludes Roberto.

As I expected, a huge number of new toys are on show at the Namm 2010 Show. Here’s a very basic rundown of what’s new so far…

NUMARK

Numark NDX-800 – MP3/CD/USB and MIDI controller. Think of it to be something like the Denon DN-S1200 but with a 7″ platter.

Numark MIXDECK – The MIXDECK is a junior version of the NS7. It basically comprises of a pair of NDX-800’s with a little mixer in the middle with the added benefit of an iPod dock. It comes with, like the NDX-800, Traktor Numark Edition.

Numark V7 – Ok, now take an NS7 and with a chainsaw cut off one of the decks. The small bit you cut off is a V7. A bigger version of the NDX-800 but also an ITCH controller. It also features the effects and so on found on the NS7.

Numark X7 - Ideally suited to sit twixt a pair of V7’s it’s basically a 4ch version of the 2ch mixer you see on the NS7 with a few more bits thrown in for good measure! It’s still currently under development and hopes to set the world alight when it’s released some time later this year. Will it have the Pioneer 800 owners quaking in their boots? Probably not, but the V7 and X7 is aimed directly at CDJ owners.

DENON

DN-X1600 – Take the luxurious DN-X1700 that is crammed with uber-brilliant DJ’ing technology and offload some of it. Add V-LINK (a kind of MIDI interface for video devices) and ta-daaaah!

…and that’s it…for now!

BEHRINGER

VMX1000USB – It’s basically an updated version of the popular VMX1000 although probably (and hopefully) better built. Click on the provided link to find out what it does…it’s quite feature packed and may tempt those who are currently looking at DENON to replace the X500 with a USB model.

Another product which has sparked a fair bit of debate since its appearance at Novembers SEDA ShowNight is the Akai APC40 which is a dedicated Ableton Live controller. This was demoed by the Numark team as well as their flagship NS7 during the evening, and got a lot of interest from the DJs who run club nights which shows how diverse the SEDA membership is. So, here it is in all its glory!

“Ableton Live software is a powerful, flexible environment for creating, performing, and producing music. This unique software demands an equally unique control instrument. Akai Professional and Ableton are proud to present the APC40: the Ableton Performance Controller. Combining the APC40 with Ableton Live transforms your experience from constructing tracks on a computer to fluid, musical creation.

The APC40 is the link between human and computer that perfectly balances analytical parameter control with creative expression. Whether you are an electronic music artist and Live is your canvass, a DJ using Live to mix or remix tracks, or a more traditional musician using Live on stage or in the studio, you will find the APC40 to the intuitive, powerful instrument that directly links your inspiration with Ableton Live.

DIRECT DESIGN
Because Akai Professional and Ableton designed the APC40 specifically for Ableton Live, you don’t need to map its controls to talk to the software. Just connect your laptop to the APC40 via USB and you’re ready to make magic. The APC40 is plug and play, so you don’t need to install drivers. First-time setup is literally three steps: load Ableton Live, plug in and power up your APC40, and select the APC40 as Ableton Live’s controller. That’s it. No mapping, no setup, no hassles.

The APC40 comes pre-mapped for instant use with Ableton Live software, so if you’re new to it, you’ll find using the APC40 to be easy to get around on. And if you’re an experienced Live user, you’ll be happy to note that you can custom-map every single knob, button, and fader on the APC40 to completely customize the controls for the way you like to work.

VIRTUAL VIEW
The APC40 talks directly to Ableton Live and Live talks directly to the APC40. This bidirectional communication makes the APC40 an advanced controller in that it can receive feedback from the software and display it on its clip matrix of 40 triggers and on LED rings surrounding each knob. The clip matrix gives you an instant view of clip status: what’s loaded, what’s playing, and what’s being recorded. Each state displays on the matrix in a different color so you can get a quick picture of clip state. You can shift your clip focus and get an overview of the clips you have loaded for your set. The APC40 has 16 knobs, each surrounded by a ring of LEDs. These LED rings make it easy to see your settings on dark stages, indicating the currently selected parameters’ values.

PREMIUM FEEL
Ableton selected Akai Professional as its partner in developing the APC40 because of Akai Pro’s leadership position in great-feeling controllers that are rock solid, rugged, and precise. From the legendary MPC series that changed the way music is made to the industry-standard MPD and MPK controllers, Akai Professional is revered by musicians, DJs, and producers everywhere for creating the feel that powers their creativity. The APC40 is built with a rugged, metal chassis and slip-proof rubber detailing. All of the knobs and faders are solid and precise for pinpoint performance. It even features a high quality, replaceable crossfader for transitioning between clips and loops assigned to “A” or “B”.

CREATIVE CONTROL
The APC40 comes Ableton Live Akai Professional APC40 Edition software, which is fully functional for performance and production. Owners of standalone editions of Ableton Live 7 or 8 can also work seamlessly with the APC40. Live 7 with the latest automatic update has full support for the APC40 and all versions of Live 8 are APC40-ready.

The APC40 has two banks of eight knobs. The first set controls Global parameters so you’ll always have instant access to your main sends, pans, and other essentials. The second bank of eight knobs is dynamically reassigned to the Track you select. You can control eight track parameters at a time, and as you switch channels, the Track knobs follow your focus. For example, you might be working with the Beat Decoder on track two. When you switch to track four, the eight Track knobs that you had been controlling the Beat Decoder with are now controlling the Flangeverb on track four. You’ll even notice that the settings for each knob load on the light rings so you’ll immediately see each knob’s status.

The APC40 also enables special clip-status views and feedback that only the APC40’s matrix can display. The matrix is not limited to only 40 clips: you can scroll and shift, enabling you to access, control, and perform with an unlimited number of cells.

The APC40 has a wide range of controllers. The eight Global knobs can access four banks of controls; the eight Track knobs control nine different track parameters each. This gives you a massive total of 72 controllers that are dynamically reassigned each time you switch tracks. Channel faders, bus faders, and a crossfader give you smooth control of key values. You have even more control power with special controls including Tap Tempo, Tempo Nudge, record enables, solo/cues, and two assignable footswitch inputs.

Designed in partnership with Ableton, the APC40 is the most advanced Live controller for the most advanced performers. The APC40 is Ableton Live performance… perfected.”
